October 30th, 2007 marks the 2nd anniversary of Cubanoson, a Cuban dance orchestra led by pianist Leonel "Papo" Ortega. Papo says “ it has been a great two years, we have performed privately for many clients and have been featured at numerous public events, radio shows and play lists around the world. I want to thank all of our clients, Djs, hosts, friends and supporters for their embracement and hope the next two years will bring even greater acceptance, recognition and exposure.”

Since their 2006 CD release titled “Recordando A Cuba”, Cubanoson has performed at numerous private and public events, including appearances at the New Jersey Cuban Parade Gala Event, (2 years running), Union City Summer Festivals (2 years running), Union City New Jersey’s historic Park Theatre, New York’s Latin Quarter (LQ), the West Gate Lounge in Nyack, Club Winner Circle in Westbury New York, and most recently headlining at NJPAC, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, at a sold out dance party. Their title track, “Recordando A Cuba” has been signed for two compilations that were released in 2007, La Noche Cubana Vol.27 in Italy, and the Rough Guide to Salsa series in the United Kingdom.

Music from Cubanoson has been featured on XM Sattelite Radio, Caliente 94 by host Jesus Salas, La Mega 97.9 (NY) by Polito Vega, Radio Vinilemania (Italy), DJ El gringo Latino of Salsa Picante Radio, DJ El Caobo in Chicago and many other great stations such as Dj Gury Gury’s show in Toronto, Dj Michelle’s show in Hong Kong. Songs from the orchestra have continuously been on the top 20 charts for Vicki Sola’s Que Viva La Musica and Latin Beat Magazine show for the entire year. Papo says, “there are so many other hosts and Djs around the world playing our music, and maintaining our songs on their playlists that the list is to extensive to name but adds, Cubanoson’s success is attributed to the many great hosts and DJs around the globe that have embraced our music.”

When asked if Cubanoson would be going overseas, Papo said “we have been actively working with promoters trying to bring the orchestra to Europe and we are hopeful to perform in the great European countries that have supported us, Germany, England, Switzerland, Italy and France, to name a few. We are also trying to do a Canadian tour in 2008.”

Cubanoson’s website has received over 7000 hits in just over one year since its inception and over 5500 views on their myspace page. Support for the orchestra has been overwhelming and despite not being signed by a major label, independently have sold several thousand Cds.

What’s next for Cubanoson? Any new recordings? Papo Ortega humbly stated there are 4 original songs ready for the next CD, and an additional 4 songs pre-selected for recording. “We are hopeful that some label will recognize our music and enjoin us in our second recording. For now we continue to perform and make people dance, this is what we like to do, it makes us and dancers happy.”

When asked for any last words? Papo replied, “I want to thank all of the hosts, Djs, promoters, friends, family and supporters for keeping our music going; and I especially want to thank all of Cubanoson’s musicians especially our on stage musical director, Roberto Rodriguez (1st trumpet) for partaking this endeavor with me in creating and maintaining the professional Cuban dance orchestra we are.”
