This site is dedicated to all women - moms, aunts, friends, step-moms, cousins, sisters and grandma’s who give their time to the game of ice hockey! And by all means - dads are welcome, too.”As a Development Director for a major Detroit area non-profit, Lynn Wilhelm, founder of AskHockeyMom.com, was as far from the ice as one can get much preferring boating, golfing and fun in the sun! But the call of the frozen rink beckoned!
Wilhelm learned quickly that youth hockey is big business, big dollars and big time! Her motto has become “hockey, hockey, hockey! Wilhelm felt it was time for a place to let others learn more and share the excitement of hockey outside the rink. The people involved make it easy for her to love the game. The kids make it special. The moms make it happen!
Wilhelm is engaged to a hockey nut and coach with two boys ages 10 and 13 who have played since the age of 4. Their sister was also a figure skater so they all have ice in their veins. They even live across the street from the rink! Wilhelm, with the nudging of her newly found family, finally succumbed and thought of the old saying if you can’t beat ‘em you might as well join ‘em . She just couldn’t sit in the rink and watch she had to get involved thus the inspiration for the site.
Wilhelm says, “I am definitely not going to try and give expert advice on the techniques of the game but offer a place for all to tell and share their stories, adventures, frustrations and triumphs in and around the rink. The game is so much more than just sliding on the ice. Hockey builds character, integrity, self esteem and teaches many life lessons. It enables kids to develop life-long friendships”.
