Noah Reilly has just released his new novel, “Out on Deep Water”. While it is the first novel by this author, the book demonstrates a strong understanding of character development and plot execution. The two main characters, Shawn and Keith, have entered a sort of contract in which they agree to sleep with no one else until the end of their seven day cruise aboard a luxury cruise ship sailing from Galveston, Texas to various ports in Mexico and the Caribbean in order to see if the boyfriend they have both been looking for is really closer than they thought… maybe even in the same cabin. Seven days is a long time though, and the guys put it to the full test.
This is a truly captivating storyline dealing with many issues faced by gay men every day. Of course, even though the main characters are gay and the story is very gay-oriented, the same issues may be seen in other lifestyles as well whether gay, lesbian, transgender or… even straight. There is the constant impression of how other people view you and trying to control those impressions. There are the stigmas associated with relationships with considerable age differences. There are the glamour aspects involved with gay living where higher incomes and no dependents creates a way of life envied by many who do not have the upper income options and have dependents who require a small or large portion of the available income; and of course, there is the constant struggle to find someone with whom to share your life.
It is a great read. It should definitely be a required travel purchase for any gay man taking a cruise. Also, any man who reads it will probably find himself booking a cruise in the near future. The gay cruise industry should love this.
