The Hamner Institutes For Health Sciences Receives $970,000 Grant For Interpreting Biomonitoring Data

(PRLEAP.COM) RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to translational research to enhance the value of the investment in biomedical sciences, has announced that Dr. Harvey Clewell, director of the Center for Human Health Assessment (CHHA) at the Hamner, has been awarded $970,000 over three years from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The grant will help in developing research models that assess potential health impacts of chemicals found in blood and other human tissues.

The first grant of $750,000 will go towards developing kinetic models to interpret biomonitoring data on selected pesticides. The remaining $220,000 will help expand the CHHA studies on perfluorinated compounds relevant to understanding how different sources of environmental exposure to these compounds contribute to the blood levels that have been measured in humans.
