Oregon Coalition To Hold Rally To Preserve The Supreme Court

(PRLEAP.COM) Oregon-The Supreme Court is the highest Court in the country – it has the final say on interpreting our Constitution and laws. Its nine Justices serve for life and the decisions they make directly influence the lives of every American. They should be fair-minded, committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans. Senators from both parties should be involved in selecting people for such an important office.

That’s why, when it comes to something as important as the Supreme Court, a nomination shouldn’t be made in a partisan way, but by seeking consensus across partisan lines for judges who care more about how the law affects ordinary Americans than they do about ideology.

The Oregon Coalition For A Fair And Independent Judiciary will be holding a rally to urge Senator Smith to follow historical precedent by working in a consultative manner with President Bush to nominate and confirm consensus candidates for the Supreme Court.

The public is invited to attend the rally on July 7th at 12 O’clock Noon in Lownsdale Square (across from the Mark O. Hatfield Courthouse) on SW 3rd and Main in Downtown Portland

The list of speakers include members from the faith community, organized labor, environment, minority rights, reproductive rights and privacy advocates.

In addition to attending the rally, the Coalition is also asking Oregonians to go to their website and sign the letter addressed to both Oregon Senators urging them to encourage President Bush to choose a consensus nominee for the Supreme Court.
