Cambridge, Mass.— Bit9, Inc., the leading provider of application control and device control solutions, today announced that Ziff Davis Media is licensing the Bit9 Knowledgebase for use in the PC Magazine Utility Library offered on http://www.PCMag.com. Ziff Davis will use the Bit9 Knowledgebase to provide extended file identification analysis in their industry-leading portfolio of Windows utilities, including Startup Cop Pro and TaskPower software.

The Bit9 Knowledgebase is a comprehensive catalog of executables, drivers, and patches found in commercial Windows applications and software packages. Malware and other unwanted software that affects Windows computers are also indexed. As the largest and the most accurate database of its kind, the Bit9 Knowledgebase provides essential information about applications to be used within PCMag.com’s utilities, including:
• original name and size of the file
• publisher that created the file
• the likelihood that the file poses a threat

The Bit9 Knowledgebase is the world’s largest file identification database for commercial applications, open-source software, drivers, libraries, and malware, currently comprising more than 4 billion files and growing by up to 50 million records a day. This software identification service helps users understand what is on their desktops, accurately assess threat levels, and build a whitelist of applications and devices appropriate to their business.

“We’re pleased to partner with the world’s leading provider of Windows utilities,” said Doug Cahill, Vice President of Business Development, Bit9. “Partnering with Bit9 allows Ziff Davis to incorporate essential information from the world’s largest file identification knowledgebase.”

“We’re using the Bit9 Knowledgebase to provide our users with a single comprehensive source of information about their applications,” said Tim Smith, Utility Program Manager, Ziff Davis. “This trustworthy metadata is gathered directly from original sources and gives actionable intelligence that includes the identification, categorization, and security analysis such as threat-level attributes.”
Cahill noted that Ziff-Davis’ use of the Bit9 Knowledgebase speaks to the unique nature and versatility of Bit9’s innovative technology. In addition to supporting the industry-leading suppliers in Windows utilities (PC Magazine), computer forensics (Guidance Software), and threat protection (Kaspersky Lab), Cahill said that the company planned to make additional announcements regarding threat research, whitelisting, and software inventory.
