Al Patrick, writing on his interest of history in the old west and passion for his childhood surroundings of southwest Montana, wrote his 356 page novel, Silent Hawk that places the reader in the 1860’s during the heart of the gold rush at Alder Gulch, Montana. It fulfills a long time dream of the Montana raised author.

Laurie, an avid reader, said she absolutely enjoyed the novel. “I laughed, I cried, and I was scared as well as surprised. Alfred Patrick did a wonderful job and I would recommend this story to everyone.” Diane, a Montana resident, said, “I enjoyed this book immensely as it has humor, romance, and suspense.” Paula, daughter of the author, said, “Even as a child his stories would grab hold of my attention. And now this story, Silent Hawk, was so captivating and I would get so wrapped up in it, that at times I had to stop and remind myself that these were my father’s words. Although I was not surprised by how much I loved this book. It is exactly what I would expect from such a passionate and inspired writer like my father.”

The book follows the Templeton family west where they settle in the ruthless and dangerous mining camp of Virginia City at Alder Gulch in the Montana Territory. The camp is besieged by murderous road agents and lawmen that are lead by the corrupt and deadly Sheriff Plummer. The story will follow the lives of many characters, including Hezekiah Templeton, the teenage son, as the protagonist. He and his friend Isaac find the camp intriguing and adventurous until Hezekiah is suddenly faced with perilous events that will thrust him into manhood and change his life forever.

Al Patrick grew up on a ranch in the shadows of the Tobacco Root Mountains in southwest Montana. He developed his imagination on the hillsides and creek bottoms during the summers while isolated and away from other children. His creative imagination remained with him through the years. He left Montana at the age of twenty and joined the United States Navy. He married a California girl and remained in California where he raised his family. He always stated his heart was in California with his family but the Montana dirt would always run through his veins.
