The National Active Retirement Association (NARA) recognized Splendido, a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Tucson, Arizona as the best large active adult/retirement community and one of the best overall active adult/retirement communities at the 2007 NARA Conference. The NARA bestowed one Gold Award and one Silver Award to Splendido at the event, which was held on October 17 – 19, 2007 in Atlanta, Ga.

Splendido is a joint venture of Mather LifeWays, a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Evanston, Ill., that creates “ways to age well” for older adults; and The Plaza Companies, a real estate investment firm headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., that specializes in retirement community development, healthcare and bioscience facilities. Splendido offers high-end, upscale resort-style living for adults 55 years and older.

These awards were determined by a panel of distinguished and experienced members of the active adult housing, homebuilding and and/or retirement housing industry. The nominated projects were judged on meeting the demands of active, mature adults throughout the country by excelling in basic project parameters of age-qualified housing, such as market demand, aging-in-place design, budget and services.

“We’re honored that NARA agrees that Splendido is a distinctive choice in retirement living, offering exceptional services and amenities,” said Sharon Harper, president and CEO of The Plaza Companies. “To be judged by the finest in a prestigious national competition was indeed an honor.”

Organizations also were honored for excellence in advertising strategies that focused on the older adult market. Mather LifeWays’ Illinois-based CCRC, The Mather, received a Gold Award for best active adult/retirement property advertisement due to its originality, design flair, creativity and ability to meet targeted objectives.

“For Splendido and our other Mather LifeWays senior residences to be recognized and praised in this way is extremely gratifying,” said Mary Leary, president and CEO of Mather LifeWays. “Our staff makes sure that our communities celebrate the life and innovation our residents bring to it. The series of awards from NARA speaks wonders about their current and future accomplishments.”
