Press Gazette's second annual Citizen Journalism Awards is to commence with a month-long online discussion on how best to recognise 1) exemplary uses of grassroots media, 2) individuals' use of personal media for journalistic ends and 3) news organisations' efforts to integrate these sources of information.

In addition to heralding the use of readers' photographs by major news organisations in coverage of breaking news stories, this year's awards will also cover online community websites and individual stories reaching the public without the intervention of major news organisations. Votivation's opinion polling tools will be used as the voting mechanism throughout the judging process.

Votivation provides the perfect partner for the awards as it facilitates polls and delivers voting mechanisms that can be exported to other websites. Citizen Journalists can use the tool to promote their own work and build a loyal following of interacting readers.

In presenting the Citizen Journalist Award to the winner in March next year Votivation is reinforcing its commitment to good journalism whilst upholding the democratic principles of the internet by presenting the Citizen Journalist Award with a presentation to the winner in March next year.

Nick Ratcliffe, Publishing Director, Wilmington Business Information Limited commented: "With Votivation delivering an online voting mechanism for The Citizen Journalist Awards, voters can interact with the entrants, highlighting the growing importance of the public's opinion in the news delivery process. With a solid technology platform at the heart of the partnership, we are growing the awards beyond last year's inaugural event."

Craig Jones, Director of Votivation, added: "These awards are recognition of the growing role of the individual in the news delivery process. With the industry changing and adapting to blogs, wikis and other technologies, it's fitting that the participant can also cast their vote for the best entries in this years awards."

The role of the Citizen Journalist Awards has become increasingly important in the last year, with many news reports taking their lead from submissions from the general public. This is realizing the democratic ideal, empowering all citizens to exercise their right to free expression, particularly on issues of broad public concern.
