Deeside College swimmers are Number One in Wales

Seven Deeside College students have this week triumphantly returned to college with 14 medals following a successful visit to the all Wales colleges' swimming gala. Josh Clough, Sam Chamberlain, Matty McCabe, Jamie Davies, Chris Wright and Dan Davies were joined by female swimmer Beth Rush at the gala, which was held at the Welsh National Swimming Pool in Swansea.

The students beat off strong competition from swimmers from across Wales to produce some excellent results. Highlights from the event included, two gold medals in the 100 and 50 metre backstroke events for Sports Scholarship student Josh Clough. James Davies also clinched two gold medals in the 50 and 100 metre butterfly events, Daniel Davies won a gold and silver medal for in the 100 and 50 metre freestyle competitions, Chris Wright secured a gold medal in the 400 metre freestyle, whilst Beth Rush brought home two silver medals in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events.

The boys team finished top of their league with 84 points, and Deeside College were the overall competition winners, finishing a huge 34 points ahead of their nearest rivals Yale College. Thanks to such outstanding performances, six of the seven swimmers have also been selected to represent Deeside College in the British Colleges Sport National Final which will be held at the Loughborough University Centre of Sporting Excellence in early 2008.

Deeside College Sports Tutor Mark Evans, who accompanied the group to Swansea, said, "All the swimmers excelled themselves and were a credit to Deeside College. We are extremely proud of the students and hope to experience success again at the National Finals".
