27 November 2007 Andalucian Dream Homes backs cancer charity

(PRLEAP.COM) Malaga, Spain 27 November 2007 - Southern Spain’s largest real estate company Andalucian Dream Homes is supporting cancer care charity Cudeca in a first of its kind scheme in Andalucia.

It’s an important step forward for the charity in terms of funding and awareness, as it continues its work for those suffering from a disease which claims the lives of millions of people around the world every year.

The Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, based in southern Spain, was founded by Joan Hunt OBE. Like many others before them, Joan and her husband Fred decided to spend their retirement enjoying the sunshine of Andalucia and moved to Fuengirola in 1982.

However, Fred became ill and medical scans revealed a tumour pressing on his brain. He sadly passed away in Malaga’s Red Cross Hospital in 1991. It was there that Joan met medical director Marisa Martin Rosello and decided to dedicate her life to helping those suffering from terminal cancer:

“I said to people rather than give me lots of flowers I’d like to have donations to do something for people in hospital, so I went to see Marisa and I said look here is some money, please do something like buy nice covers, and curtains and pictures on the walls…”

It eventually led to the creation of the Cudeca Cancer Care project, and volunteers began to come forward. Then in 1995 the Mayor of Benalmadena donated land to Cudeca to build their hospice in Arroyo de la Miel.

Since then, Joan has accomplished an astonishing amount. She was awarded the European Woman of Achievement award in 1997 and presented with an OBE by Prince Charles in 2002. As Spain’s only independent cancer hospice, providing free at-home and in-patient palliative treatment, Cudeca has a long waiting list and depends on donations and fundraising.

Real estate company Andalucian Dream Homes was their official partner for their largest charity event, the 2007 Walkathon, providing funding for the event and carrying out publicity in Spain. David Honeyman, CEO of Andalucian Dream Homes said: “Sponsoring the Walkathon allowed us to give something back to the community in which we live and work. Andalucian Dream Homes is proud to be associated with this multi-faceted, admirable organisation.”

Rafael Olalla, Cudeca’s financial director, added: “The sponsorship agreement we have reached with Andalucian Dream Homes is very exciting for Cudeca. For us, it is a great achievement to obtain support from such an important company in the Malaga province and we hope this example of social responsibility from Andalucian Dream Homes will be followed by other organisations…”
