Hearts and lives can be changed if we take the time to care for people with disabilities. Jackie Mills-Fernald, director of Access Ministries at McLean Bible Church, can attest to it.
Mills-Fernald is the focus of Oakseed Ministries’ first podcast addressing the issue of compassion and the child with disabilities, the topic for the 2008 Oakseed Ministries’ essay contest. The interview is the first in a series of interviews highlighting leading advocates for children with disabilities.
Through Access Ministries, Mills-Fernald works with McLean Bible Church to create an inclusive culture in the church. Developing inclusive friendships is one of the largest obstacles facing people with disabilities.
“I really would encourage young people to be involved in, to extend that hand, to be friends with somebody who is different than themselves, to be that mentor. For most of our children with disabilities, it is a very lonely, isolated life,” said Mills-Fernald.
Oakseed Ministries gives students 22 and under the opportunity to engage in learning more about conditions facing children with disabilities and to reflect on those issues through the eyes of compassion.
“I really think that if Jesus was here on earth right now, the group He would be hanging out with are those with disabilities, and those that are the disenfranchised, sometimes forgotten, the ones that society views as second class citizens, but not in God’s eyes,” said Mills-Fernald.
