Scarborough jewellers Bright & Sons celebrated a sparkling 150 years with a special commemorative exhibition on 21st November. The store had invited its customers to the event at 27 & 28 Nicholas Street, where fabulous guest collections of antique and modern jewellery were on display.

The event was extremely well attended, with hundreds of customers dropping in during the day to get a glimpse of the glittering display. The shop was busy from 11.00 am right through to 9.00 pm when the exhibition finally closed. Many of the customers, who had received private invitations from Bright & Sons, were particularly interested in the antique jewellery collection on show. Champagne and canapés were also served to the visitors.

“The shop has been an important part of the community for 150 years and it felt more like a party than a corporate function,” said Bright’s’ manager Heather Cramer, a Scarborian by birth. “We were delighted to mark this significant milestone for Bright’s with an exhibition of modern and antique jewellery. It was wonderful to see so many of our customers past and present as we celebrated an historic occasion for the company.”

Heather has been in the jewellery trade for almost 40 years, the last decade of which she has spent with Bright’s in Scarborough.

Opened in 1857, the landmark jewellery store in Scarborough was founded by Bright brothers Frederick, also a local magistrate, and Herbert, an acknowledged dog expert, who both moved from Sheffield. In its early history, the store won several awards for its creations, including the Prize Medal for Jewellery at the York Exhibition in 1866, and certificates in the Fine Art and Industrial Divisions at the London Exhibition in 1872. Many eminent members of the local community have also been its customers.

Bright’s was purchased by Sheffield family business H.L. Brown in 1953. The character of the shop has however remained largely intact. In addition to the exquisite modern designs in diamond jewellery, Bright’s is also famous for its period pieces.
