Chicago, Illinois – According to animal rescue groups, the main reason cats end up in local shelters is a behavorial problem. Joan Levergood, well-known animal behaviorist, and the Animal Spirit Healing and Education Network (ASN) network are offering a series of teleclasses that explores feline behavior and how to correct feline behavioral problems that can reduce the number of cats turned into shelters by owners.

Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of animal and feline behavior in Fundamentals of Feline Behavior. The second class, Feline Behavior Solutions, will explore common causes of feline behavioral problems and methods to change the cat’s behavior.

“The top two behavior problems for feline caretakers are litter box issues and cat-on-cat aggression. Unfortunately, those are the two main reasons many cats end up in shelters as owner surrenders..and many times are euthanized for a behavioral problem that could have been corrected,”said Carol Schultz, Founder of Animal Spirit Healing and Education Network. “The common causes of these behavioral problems is instinctive feline safety and dominance issues. Feline caretakers will learn in Joan Levergood’s classes what factors influence feline behavior, what motivates the behavior and basic management strategies and methods that will change the behavior.”

The course studies are useful for cat owners, veterinarians and vet techs, animal communicators, rescuers, breeders and handlers said Schultz.

Joan Levergood has been a practicing feline behavior consultant for over eight years, and has helped hundreds of people from across the country with common and uncommon cat behavior issues. She is an experienced feline veterinary assistant, animal communicator, Bach Flower Essence practitioner, and is behavioral consultant for the Tree House Animal Foundation, a local Chicago no-kill cat shelter.
