Renowned Artist David Scotland Displays Controversial Art Exhibition

History can now record another first for the art world. It is not unlike Jasper Johns' painterly version of the American flag. Correction: it's not at all like that. Internationally renowned artist David Scotland has unveiled a new piece of "illegal American artwork" revealing "the shocking truth" for a highly controversial art exhibition called "America the Beautiful" during July 2005 in Encinitas, California, at a local coffee shop and art gallery called E Street Cafe.

When asked what his "revealing" art looks like, the artist says, "People have been asking me, 'Is it you in the nude with cattle brands? Is it George W. Bush with swastikas? What does it look like?' And I say, 'First of all, I don't pose nude because I think there's enough violence in the world (laughs), and second, it would never occur to me to even think of doing that to President Bush. I respect him and all that he's doing. And third, it looks like the American flag because it is the American flag - coupled with highly charged notes, so to speak."

His highly controversial version of an "illegal" American flag with scientific lab notes from the 1930s is shown in such a way that passers-by see it whether they want to or not. It not only dominates the main stage window of E Street Cafe, it seems to be dominating in-house conversations, as well.

The artist warns, "If you see this piece, you'll be up all night, wondering. Just wondering. I mean really wondering about what abortion, suicide, death and employment laws are really about in terms of the bigger picture. A picture too bleak for many. I don't think they could handle this artwork. Like Jesus said, 'Let the dead bury the dead. Come and walk with me.' So I am."

This art preaches neither gospel nor politics. "I guess it could be spun in a negative way, the way so many losers in America love to do. I just thought that the American flag, the famous flag of freedom, was a fitting symbol to use for this particular project about quantum energy and America. The American flag works perfectly. Especially when so many spiritually misdirected citizens in our nation only believe in believing that we live by 'thou shall not kill.' If we actually believed that, would we kill as much as we do? As much as we have? I don't know. Sometimes it's legal, you know, to kill. Biblically speaking, that is. Like when it's in defense of your family, saving an innocent child, or your own life," said Scotland.

David Scotland and E Street Cafe are inviting "all who dare" to attend the upcoming art reception as it takes a closer look at "American the Beautiful" on July 18, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Speakers will include R.J. Wharton, Bill Wechter and David Scotland. John Mosley will be present also to discuss his views relating the history and life of Swami's Point, along with Robert Nanninga as host.
