Fort Worth lawyer Steven C. Laird reminds construction workers to make sure they take extra care in their dangerous jobs.

Attorneys from the Fort Worth personal injury law firm of Laird & Cummings, P.C., point out that according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction accidents led to the highest occupational fatality rate in the nation in 2006, with 1,226 fatal occupational injuries among construction workers.

“Even though most workers have been trained in basic safety procedures, accidents and even fatalities can obviously occur,” says Steven C. Laird, a partner in the Fort Worth personal injury law firm of Laird & Cummings, P.C. “There’s often not enough oversight to make sure that all the proper precautions are being taken.”

Studies show that most construction site accidents are caused by faulty materials, malfunctioning equipment, negligence, or a disregard of proper procedures. Personal injury or death from falling equipment is the most frequently reported construction accident, according to the federal government report.

“The true causes of an accident are not always the most obvious ones, and determining liability can be a difficult and time-consuming process,” says Laird. “Most insurers will try to limit their exposure and limit the compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and the emotional toll that these accidents can cause. That’s why it’s important to have an experienced and aggressive lawyer on your side.”
