Mammoth strikes two wells in Clinton Co., KY

ALBANY, KY, - Ask any driller and they will tell you that oil, that hub upon which all of modern society turns, can be a most elusive commodity. But Mammoth Resource Partners, Inc. (MRP), an oil and gas exploration firm located in south central Kentucky, has recently scored two exciting oil strikes in Clinton County, KY.

The first oil strike posed a considerable challenge for Mammoth Field Services, the drilling arm of MRP. The well was drilled on an undeveloped mountainside during a wetter than normal spring, and while every drill is an expensive endeavor, “We had many additional expenses in preparation and dozer work,” MRP drill consultant Steve Burchett reported. The mud was so deep that “Every time it rained the crew would have to walk or drive the dozer up to the rig just to work.”

Lost time and equipment failures slowed progress, but several previous drills had given Burchett confidence that the mountain would yield a good return. He explained, “It’s very important to watch the pencil cave formation, the way it jumps up and down under there, and at what level the Knox formation comes in. Usually when you get those good shows of oil in the first break of the Knox, there’s a big well in there.”

During the drill, several large pockets of gas were hit and oil was found in three different formations, or ‘pay zones,’ and in three breaks of the Knox formation, the bottom most formation where oil is known to exist. With treatment, Burchett believes, the Sunnybrook alone is capable of producing 300 barrels a day.

The second strike, also in Clinton County, involved the re-opening of what was initially a 600 barrels a day well when it was originally drilled in 1992. During its lifespan the well had earned in the neighborhood of a million and a half dollars. It was plugged and abandoned because water and paraffin problems were drastically cutting into the profit margin when you consider that oil, at that time, averaged less than $19 a barrel. When it was capped in 1997 the well was still producing 20-30 barrels per day.

It was no surprise to the property owner that when the drillers bored through the three cement plugs there was an immediate show of oil. “I felt that there was still plenty of oil down there,” he remarked. Prior to gas gun fracturing and acid wash treatments there was already 600 feet of oil in the bore.

MRP President Dr. Roger Cory feels that these oil discoveries are not just good news for the investors but for the country. With crude oil hovering around $60 a barrel, “Every barrel of oil we produce is one less barrel the United States has to import.” Statistically, of course, a large percentage of drills are not commercially producible, but the philosophy at Mammoth Resource Partners is that no reasonable opportunity to deliver oil to the consumer and profits to the investors shall be overlooked.

Mammoth Resource Partners, Inc. was founded in March 2004 in Cave City, Kentucky and currently has over 40 producing wells on 4000 leased acres in south central Kentucky and Overton County, TN. For more information go to www.mammothresource.com
