Reverend Donald Corley, a retired Presbyterian pastor and self-published author, offers free, electronic copies of his books at www.donaldcorley.com.
The author explains why he offers free copies of his books: “Writing is my hobby. Rather than spending money on boats, golf clubs, or travel, I write and self-publish books. I can give away the books because I own the copyright. Anyone with a computer can download the books.
The Christian Pastor’s Work, published in 2005, states: “Christian pastors always face tensions related to their social situation.”
Stress emerges because pastors and congregations use conflicting language when talking about the Bible. Conflicts over denominational traditions evoke stress; a pastor’s confusion about role perception and expectations always fosters stress; and secular definitions of success imposed upon the pastor’s work inevitably promote stress. Political movements that obscure the essence of the Christian gospel add to the pastor’s stress.
Part I establishes the author’s credentials. Part II, discusses the linguistic impasse about the Bible and suggests that canonical analysis offers a less tension-filled way of speaking about the Bible. Part III offers a demonstration of canonical analysis as applied to Paul’s I Corinthian letter. Part IV proposes several “Components of a Pastoral Model,” interpolated from the educational and psychiatric fields. Because Friedrich Nietzsche was a critic of Christianity, Part V contains essays related to some of Nietzsche’s criticisms. Brief essays in Part VI discuss specific aspects of a Christian pastor’s work.
The book grows out of Dr. Corley’s fifty years as a pastor and as the Director of Pastoral Care at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. During his twenty years with the hospital, Corley was a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and a Certified Supervisor in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. He teaches philosophy as adjunct faculty at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
The seventy-nine-year-old minister started his first novel in 1991, upon his retirement as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Gonzales, Texas. His books include one historical novel, TYCHICUS: THE ROMAN COURIER, and six contemporary crime novels: THE SHERIFF, THE PEDOPHILE MURDERS, DOUBLE MURDER IN NEW ORLEANS, THE UNHAPPY PROSTITUTE, MAYHEM IN SOUTH TEXAS, and THE CREMATION MURDERS. The free books are in PDF format and may be downloaded from www.donaldcorley.com
