California Motorcycle Accident Attorney Michael Padway Notes High Rate of Uninsured Motorists Involved in Accidents

Michael Padway, a highly-experienced motorcycle accident attorney in California noted the increase in uninsured and under-insured motorists on America’s roads. In California, according to the Insurance Institute of America, 22% of all motorists are uninsured. Overall their study estimates that 14% of all drivers in the U.S. are uninsured, with the highest uninsured driver estimates coming from Colorado (32%), New Mexico (30%), South Carolina (28%), and Alabama (25%).

“A high number of today’s motorists are uninsured,” stated California Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Michael Padway. “Even if a motorist has insurance, they may be under insured. This occurs when a person who caused an accident has insurance limits that are not high enough to fully compensate for the losses they incurred or caused to another motorist or motorcyclist.”

A University of Michigan study found that the average hospital medical costs of a motorcyclist involved in an accident were $33,000 in 2002. Uninsured Motorcycle Insurance covers the cost of medical care and loss of earnings in the event a motorcyclist is in an accident with an uninsured driver. Uninsured insurance can also cover the repair costs for a motorcycle up to the insured limit in the event of an accident with someone who is not insured.

“Typical insurance coverage provides for only $25,000 in losses,” stated Padway.
“Medical costs for a motorcyclist who is involved in a motorcycle accident can be very high. For example, often with medical costs, loss of earnings, and other factors, the damage incurred to a motorcyclist can exceed $25,000, $50,000 or even $100,000.”

When looking for motorcycle insurance Michael Padway suggest that one should also make sure their medical insurance doesn't have a clause that excludes injuries sustained while riding a motorcycle. Also be aware that some insurance policies have exclusions if you are involved in a ‘speed contest’, like a drag race, or an organized race, which may include ‘track days’.
