Memphis Youth Coalition Featured for Introducing Area Students to Music Industry

(PRLEAP.COM) Memphis, Tenn. August 1, 2008 – The Memphis Youth Coalition, a nonprofit organization based out of Memphis Tennessee that connects 13 to 19 year old youth and their families with organizations that meet their needs, was recently featured in the Memphis Business Journal for helping the youth in the area who love music understand more about the music and recording industries.

The idea of the Music Education and Intervention Program, which is the Coalition’s program to introduce the teens to the industry, came to the Memphis Youth Coalition president Barry Jackson in 2003 when he received interest from some gang members who wanted to rap and sing and used his work with the Memphis Leadership program in the area to figure out the best way to use this love of music to help out teens.

According to the feature, Jackson was a musician in Atlanta before returning to Memphis, and was able to introduce music to students who were interested in singing, but didn’t want to spend time in the school band or choir. Teens in the program are allowed to sing and rap, as long as their songs were not about anything negative.
