Sexy and Smart in Brazil: Women Reject Macho Culture with Help from Best Selling Books by Steven Carter
(
PRLEAP.COM) Los Angeles, CA August 9, 2008 – Author Steven Carter was recently profiled in the Los Angeles Times for his best selling self-help books "What Smart Women Know" and "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves." The daily newspaper provides information on local news, business, sports, politics, science, environment, entertainment and lifestyle.
The article titled "Not Lost in Translation" explains how Carter’s self-help books have become blockbuster bestsellers in Brazil. The books were originally published in 1990 and 1996 in the U.S., but have only recently become popular in Brazil. "Carter, the author of 20 books, including the New York Times bestseller "Men Who Can’t Love" didn’t find out his books were on Brazil’s bestseller lists until he received a huge royalty check from a Brazilian publisher in the mail," wrote staff writer Nicky Loomis.
""What Smart Women Know," which became a national bestseller in the U.S., selling almost half a million copies, has already sold close to 400,000 copies in Brazil," wrote Loomis. The book has been on the bestseller lists for 98 weeks. "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves" has sold more than 100,000 copies in Brazil in the past 17 weeks and has also remained on the bestseller lists since its publication.
"What Smart Women Know" has been on every major bestseller list in Brazil, including Veja Magazine, the No. 1 newsmagazine in Brazil, and Folha de S. Paulo, the largest newspaper in Latin America. The role of women in Brazilian culture is greatly evolving and the self-help industry is becoming a craze in the country.
These books were best sellers in the United States 20 years ago, also feeding into Carter’s surprise of the sudden bestseller status in Brazil. He has been to Brazil twice this year to support this new success. Carter currently serves as Dean of Administration at Yo San University, a school of Chinese medicine in Los Angeles, CA.
