American Author Steven Carter May Be First to Profit from Brazil's Economic Boom as Latin American Women Invest in Spirituality and Self-Help

Los Angeles, California   August 15, 2008   Entertainment News
(PRLEAP.COM) Los Angeles, CA - August 15, 2008 – Author Steven Carter was recently profiled in the Los Angeles Times for his best selling self-help books "What Smart Women Know" and "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves." The daily newspaper provides information on local news, business, sports, politics, science, environment, entertainment and lifestyle.

The article titled "Not Lost in Translation" explains how Carter’s self-help books have suddenly become blockbuster bestsellers in Brazil. The books were originally published in 1990 and 1996 in the U.S. "Carter, the author of 20 books, didn’t find out his titles were on Brazil’s bestseller lists until he received his first huge royalty check from a Brazilian publisher in the mail," wrote staff writer Nicky Loomis. This may make Carter the first American to be rewarded for Brazil’s unprecedented economic growth.

The role of women in Brazilian culture is greatly and rapidly evolving as Brazil is poised to become the fifth largest economy in the world, and the self-help industry is becoming a craze in the country.

""What Smart Women Know," which became a national bestseller in the U.S. in 1990, selling almost half a million copies, has already sold close to 400,000 copies in Brazil," wrote Loomis. The book has been on the bestseller lists for 98 weeks. "Men Like Women Who Like Themselves" has sold more than 100,000 copies in Brazil in the past 17 weeks, remaining on the bestseller lists since its publication in April.

"What Smart Women Know" has been on every major bestseller list in Brazil, including Veja Magazine, the No. 1 newsmagazine in Brazil, and Folha de S. Paulo, the largest newspaper in Latin America.

Almost twenty years have passed since Carter’s two books were best sellers in the United States, which may explain why his sudden bestseller status in Brazil was such a surprise. He has already been to Brazil twice this year to support this new success, and he will appear at the Bienal de Sao Paulo at the end of this month. In May 2009 his Brazilian publisher, GMT, will release their third title, "Men Who Can’t Love." This book was actually Carter’s best in the U.S., landing him a spot on the New York Times bestseller list and selling almost 4 million copies. Carter currently serves as Dean of Administration at Yo San University, a school of Chinese medicine in Los Angeles, CA.
