Birthing From Within launches new program and workshop to train fathers to teach childbirth and parenting classes to men

(PRLEAP.COM) A new initiative, "Fathering From Within," has been developed by Birthing From Within, and will be launched with a three-day workshop in September in Hollywood, California. This new program will train experienced fathers how to initiate expectant dads into the mysteries of birth and new parenthood.

"There are some things that just have to be passed from man to man," says Pam England, midwife and author of "Birthing From Within", a wildly popular and controversial book about childbirth preparation. "Fathers are often left out of the birth process, or are pressured to be "coaches". We are proposing a new and radical model, something that is actually ancient: wise men initiating young men into the mysteries of birth and new parenthood."

Birthing From Within workshops train professionals to focus on the emotional and inner preparation that women and men should undertake before becoming parents. There have been many requests over the years for a special program for fathers to learn how to teach new dads the unique philosophy and approach of Birthing From Within. The organization has responded by taking their work to a new level: teaching fathers how to effectively and compassionately mentor expectant dads through the ups and downs of pregnancy, birth and early weeks of parenting.

The workshop trains men and women how to lead classes and support groups in their community. Topics include: preparing for the intensity of birth; learning mindfulness and pain-coping practices; preparing for a cesarean or medicated birth; what a woman really needs in labor; and postpartum planning.

There is a focus on the emotional and personal preparation for birth and parenting, something that is often overlooked in conventional childbirth classes. Every session will teach ways to deepen a couple’s intimacy and improve communication skills during pregnancy, birth and beyond.

Immediately following the workshop, a three-hour "Forum for Fathers" will be held especially for the men who attend the training. After the workshop, there will be ongoing support and materials for fathers who want to bring the unique approach of Birthing From Within to the men in their communities.
