Friends, cooks and servers reunite when Olympian re-opens local Chinese Restaurant, Dragon Inn
(
PRLEAP.COM) September 14th, 2008-Glenwood, Illinois-Nearly 45 years ago, Dragon Inn, a popular Chinese restaurant among locals in Glenwood, Illinois, stood as one of the few ethnic restaurants in the area.
When the owners of the Dragon Inn decided to retire in December, they closed the dine-in section of the restaurant and only offered carry out. They planned on shutting the doors to their business for good.
Mike Foy, a two time competitor in the Olympics, along with his wife Tina, just so happen to be looking for a restaurant to call their own. Mike, who competed in 1988 and in 1992 as a Greco-Roman wrestler, took home a silver medal. He would now be taking home the title of restaurant owner.
Currently a manager for a pharmaceutical sales company, Foy and Tina, a hospitality worker, said they wanted a place where people could go to enjoy a meal.
"There really are not many places on the far South Side. Our broker told us that there was a nearby restaurant for sale, and we saw it was the Dragon Inn"
The couple was already aware of the meals the restaurant previously offered, and didn’t want to lose that. "I felt the restaurant could be restored. It had always offered large portions and great food. This isn’t your watered down version of Chinese food," the Olympian said.
With the Foys having a great opinion on the food already, they didn’t feel the need to change the menu, nor any of the cooks, whose experience at the Dragon Inn totaled more than 30 years. They have also kept employed the same bartenders and waitresses.
The appearance of the restaurant has however, endured a few changes. Besides cleaning, the couple remodeled the eatery. The bar area was completed with a 50-inch plasma screen accompanied by granite and hardwood floors. The couple also took a logo that was present in the bar, brightened it and placed it in a position that ensures recognition. Customers can also expect to hear the sounds of jazz music and see a new late night menu in the near future. Also, starting September 15th thru December 31st the Dragon Inn will introduce a community outreach program that will help local schools fundraise. During lunch (11:30-2:30 pm) customers can decide to donate 10% of their pretax bill to a participation school of their choice. In addition, the top three schools that raise the most funds will win a visit from an Olympic Athlete/Speaker.
The Foys strategically modeled only the appearance, leaving the service and it’s providers untouched.
"It’s the history of the Dragon Inn that sets it apart." Mr. Foy stated. "Business today is all about service, meeting the needs of the customers, and we are doing that. This is a staple in the community, it was a gathering place of old friends-and the food is great."
The dress is casual, so families can comfortably enjoy dinner.
Dragon Inn still has a carry out service and accepts major credit cards. The restaurant caters to groups and takes reservations.
About Dragon Inn: Dragon Inn has been around since 1963 and was recently brought by Mike and Tina Foy. For hours of operation please call (708) 756-3344.
