Despite Life Challenges, Gem City Hardware Store Stands Strong
(
PRLEAP.COM) September 21, 2008- Dayton, Ohio- Any business able to provide service for more than 50 years should be considered an achievement. Imagine starting a company with multiple partners, only to find that later on down the road, it’s a one man show.
That’s exactly what happened to Linda Evans, co-owner of Gem City Hardware store in Dayton, Ohio.
The retail store specializes in all types of hardware items and was established in 1957 by Willie Evans. Although he initially was not the only mastermind, inevitable life conditions have prevented further partnership.
When Evans became ill with Alzheimer’s disease, a terminal illness that includes symptoms such and memory loss and confusion, his wife Linda had to take over.
"My husband started the company with a couple of other partners and they are all basically at an age where they can no longer work," she said.
Linda, now a co-owner of Gem City Hardware, proves that one doesn’t have to create and idea to have it successfully implemented.
The store carries everything from nuts and bolts to plumbing and furnace items, and that’s to say the least.
"We’ve always tried to maintain the motto, that if you couldn’t find it, you can come to Gem City because we have it." Evans said. "We also find hard to get items. If you call us and we don’t have it, maybe we can get for you. We try very hard in that department."
Through all of the ups and downs, Evans said her proudest moment was being able to celebrate the store’s 50th anniversary in September of 2007.
Regardless of the changes, any business still standing after 5 decades has done something correctly. But Gem City Hardware doesn’t allow their longevity to be their only credit. They are still finding ways to provide excellent customer service.
"We have coupons and a birthday club customers can join by visiting the website
