Oberthur and TrustBearer Labs demonstrate the first European E-Citizen Card for use with online services

October 31, 2008 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Oberthur Technologies and TrustBearer have partnered to provide electronic European Citizen Card cardholders with the first simple, secure way to use their smart card to authenticate to e-government services and web-based applications, including financial and consumer applications. European governments will now be able offer secure, private online services to citizens using the same cards they have issued for identification.

"This new generation of Oberthur Technologies identity documents combined with TrustBearer authentication solutions will considerably simplify the use of e-government services by the citizens with a high security level." comments Xavier Fricout, , Identity Division Deputy Managing Director. "It perfectly enhances the portfolio of identity solutions for governments of Oberthur Technologies."

The European Citizen Card is an open application standard, defining logical data structure, security and privacy mechanisms of the data and interface and communication protocols. Identification, authentication, electronic qualified signature are the main services offered by the European Citizen Card. The issuance of the European Citizen Card and its use to access
online services will be presented during the exhibition "Cartes & Identification 2008" at Villepinte.

Using the TrustBearer access product, Oberthur will provide a solution that will work with plug-and-play functionality on all operating systems and web browsers. Removing the need to download and install middleware, the solution eliminates the need for client-side passwords and makes the process simple for citizens.

With TrustBearer Access, Oberthur Technologies will be offering the only solution that will work with any service that accepts OpenID and SAML credentials and provides mutual, multi-factor authentication for the client, server, and user. Web services currently using password as a method for authenticating users will also be able license the solution, as a cost-effective way to securely identify users and protect against phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks.

"TrustBearer's model is to make the usage of smart cards and PKI ubiquitous over the web. It is a solution that works today and we already support many major European national smart cards and the US government PIV, TWIC, and Common Access Card credentials. By working with Oberthur, we were able to quickly support the European eCitizen card in all our suite of online applications without requiring users to install new software.
