The Hong Kong Cyberport Builds World-Class Network Infrastructure Using Cisco IP Technology

September 24, 2004 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
HONG KONG, September 21, 2004 – Looking beyond the boundaries, Hong Kong Cyberport realized the value of an IP network by enabling high-speed wireless and wired communications, and a full range of next generation technology applications built on Cisco® Internet Protocol (IP) technology. .

The first in Hong Kong to deploy a 10 Gigabit Ethernet network, Cyberport is providing a "bandwidth freeway' for its tenants, local IT companies and professionals to develop, test, and run a wide variety of next-generation applications in information technology (IT) and digital content creation, management and delivery.

"As the IT flagship of Hong Kong, Cyberport aims to provide a robust technology platform for tenants, including local and multi-national IT companies and professionals, to foster technology innovation and grow their business,' said David Chung, Senior Manager, Information Technology Operations, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited. "We opted for Cisco as one of our major vendors as it offers a true end-to-end IP solution for a fully converged voice, video and data network.'

The Cisco® IP infrastructure powers a world-class, end-to-end high-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet based on Cisco® AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data). Equipment deployed includes Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco Catalyst 3500 Series switches. The network enables wireless and wired broadband Internet access, voice and data services anywhere, anytime at the Cyberport campus. It supports high-speed connections with overseas networks and is scalable to accommodate over 10 times the network traffic without compromising system stability and performance.

The network also forms the backbone of the Digital Media Centre, which offers facilities and equipment for graphics rendering, animation, motion capture, and high-definition video; the one-stop wireless applications development, testing and delivery platform of the Wireless Development Centre; and the iResource Centre that offers access to thousands of archived digital contents, at Cyberport.

"We need a high-speed, high-availability and high-bandwidth network to support the creation and delivery of different genres of digital contents, be it movies, videos, music or documents. At the same time, it needs to be open and scalable to support our launch of new services, and help ensure uninterrupted connections to external and overseas networks. Cisco solutions answer to all these diligently,' remarked Chung.

In addition to Cyberport's world-class network, IP telephony and wireless local-area networks (LANs) are deployed throughout the campus. The Cisco IP Multicast solution is also deployed for offering broadcasting-quality (MPEG 2) TV video over IP.

"It is our great pleasure working with Cyberport to deliver this world-class network, where international and local IT companies and professionals in Hong Kong can enjoy the true value of an IP network and reap tangible benefits,' said Frankie Sum, managing director, Cisco Systems (HK) Ltd.

"We are pleased to see that the effort is being recognized recently by the internationally acclaimed ‘Intelligent Building of the Year' award, which is given to commercial buildings that have used broadband and information systems technology to provide advanced services to tenants,' added Mr. Sum.
