CJD Aware! Joins NORD And Other Organizations In Observing Rare Disease Day, February 28

(PRLEAP.COM) CJD Aware! is joining The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and other organizations global-wide in observing the first Rare Disease Day (February 28) in the United States.

"We are pleased to be a part of such a worthy effort," remarked Christy Brom, the founder and director of CJD Aware!, a non-profit, information organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The organization was formed in the spring of 2002 after Ms. Brom’s mother, Sara Brom, died from the classic/sporadic form of Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare, fatal neurological disease. At this time, there is no cure or treatment for CJD, which qualifies it as rare disease. According to NORD, the reason for Rare Disease Day is, "…to raise awareness of rare diseases and the need for safe, effective treatments, people around the world will join together to observe the 2nd Annual Rare Disease Day on the last day of February (Feb. 28, 2009). NORD is coordinating this project in the U.S., and is inviting all patient organizations, caregivers, researchers, and companies developing orphan products to join in this observance. The purpose is to focus attention on rare diseases, the challenges encountered by those affected, and the importance of research to develop diagnostics and treatments."

Added Ms. Brom, "Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is just one of thousands of rare diseases that affect mankind today. Rare Disease Day puts the spotlight not on just one, but all of them. How wonderful it would be if an individual could just go to the doctor, get a diagnosis, then go to a drug store have a prescription filled, start taking the medicine, and managing it as millions do with their high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Unfortunately, at this time, that’s not the case. That’s why Rare Disease Day is so important."
