Men's Ties are Top of the Pops!

- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

Despite recent well-publicized reports of a growing trend towards a more casual workplace and the supposed impending death of the necktie, the popularity of ties is showing something of a resurgence, led by popular bands who are now opting to don this most contentious of men's accessories.

Thanks to bands like Glasgow-based Franz Ferdinand, 80’s style narrow or “skinny” ties are in fashion again, with fans joining in the re-emergence of this now-fashionable neckwear. “We’re certainly seeing more interest in skinny ties since popular bands started wearing them,” says Gary Baker, owner of UK online tie shop, Tie Warehouse (www.tiewarehouse.co.uk). “And many of the requests specify bands like Green Day as an example of the ties they’re looking for”.

The return of the skinny tie however, is only the beginning of a growing trend in the casual wearing of ties. “Ties are increasingly being worn as an additional fashionable accessory,” says Baker. He suggests that the way ties are worn is contributing to its revival. “To look the part, you want to wear your tie loose with a largish knot with your top button undone. What you don’t want however is to look like a stressed businessman – that’s just not at all cool!” Although this may not be totally suitable for your office meetings, in less formal settings this new, relaxed style of wearing ties has started appearing more often, with Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs leading the way with thick striped ties at T in the Park and Glastonbury earlier this year.

So if you want to join this new tie trend, what styles and colours should you be looking for? “Pink is still very popular, with light blue and other lighter shades increasingly attracting attention” says Baker. He expects these colours to continue for a while as well. “We’ve come a long way since the yellow shirts and brown ties of the 70’s!” laughs Baker. In addition to lighter shades, Baker also believes stripes will remain a strong favourite, with plain, solid colour ties always a sure bet.

So there you have it. If you still have a pile of old ties gathering dust at the bottom of your cupboard, you may want to fish them out. You never know – they may be back in fashion!
