Beehive’s Real-time 3D Graphics Solution, Wasp’3D™, Helps MBC (Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation) Cover the 2005 Mauritius Elections Successfully
(
PRLEAP.COM) Wasp’3D™ - an advanced real-time 3D graphics solution, has helped MBC broadcast live 3D graphics depicting election analysis, results and forecasts - all using real-time 3D graphics and simulations. This is the first time that MBC has used real-time 3D graphics for a live coverage and has received great viewer response.
Feedback from Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC)
Talking about the impact that Wasp’3D™ had on overall live coverage and viewer feedback, Mr. Ravin Bacchoo, Acting Director General, MBC, said, “MBC is delighted with the graphics generated by Wasp’3D™ and its tremendous impact on live elections coverage of the 2005 National elections in Mauritius. The real-time 3D graphics generated by Wasp’3D™ is a turning point in live broadcasting in Mauritius and we are proud to be a part of this. Elections is a challenging project given the volume of live data and we are happy to say that the Beehive team put in their best effort in the integration of the data with real-time 3D graphics. The fact that they did this within a short notice and strict timelines makes their effort really commendable."
End-to-end Responsibility for 3D Graphics
Beehive helped MBC with end-to-end responsibility for real-time 3D graphics generation. The Beehive team was on site to handle tasks spanning template design, data automation, vote share calculation and vote swing vis-à-vis the previous elections, candidate profiles and up-to-date automated results displayed in lower thirds. Prior to that, the Beehive team completed an analysis of the client requirements and planned out the complete project to make sure the execution is flawless. The Beehive design team in India designed the graphic templates as per MBC’s brand requirements. Harel Mallac Technologies helped the Beehive team coordinate with MBC in data acquisition and overall project execution.
Real-time Automated Data Integration
With Wasp’3D™, the entire process of integration of data with the graphics template was automated. As real-time data was being made available from each constituency, the data would be immediately picked up by Wasp’3D™. The software would analyse the data, carry out calculations as required by the graphics template and convert the data into three-dimensional pie charts. The graphic would be then made ready to be sent on-air as and when the anchor requires it. From data analysis to creation of pie charts to integration with the graphic template - all this is done within a fraction of a second.
Live Broadcast with Scores of Full-frame 3D Graphics
Full frame 3D graphics depicting various scenarios were generated all through the polling day and the day the votes were counted. The graphics illustrated up-to-the-second developments for 21 constituencies across Mauritius, including - top six candidates, top three winners from each constituency, vote share comparison with the previous elections, vote swing for or against a particular alliance. Not just this, Wasp’3D™ also generated 3D graphics showing region-wise vote statistics, including, voter break-up, percentage of votes, vote swing, alliance strength and more. On the polling day, graphics depicting voter turnout were generated live. Those included - voter turnout figures, percentage of voters and abstainers, turnout comparison with previous elections and many more.
24/7 Live Results with Fully Automated ‘Lower Third’
Besides full frame graphics, Wasp’3D™ also aired continuous live results by means of the ‘lower third’ graphic running in an automated mode - 24/7. The ‘lower third’ ran without any manual intervention showing information on each constituency, covering - top three leading candidates, national tally, top three alliances, alliance likely to form the government etc.
Cutting-edge Programmable Palette Technology™ (PgP Technology™)
The unique ‘Programmable Palette (PGP) Technology’ developed by Beehive is available only with Wasp’3D™. The PgP technology provides the designer the flexibility and power to create infinite materials and textures by mixing and blending four texture types with each other in a variety of ways. This in turn incredibly expands the creative possibilities for an artist as he can easily create an original texture or a material without getting restricted. The PgP technology can also blend Bitmaps (images); Video (live and off-the disk); and DDS textures (Direct Draw Surface) and further expand the canvas of the artist to experiment and create something out-of-the-box.
Talking about the success of the Mauritius Elections project, Mr. Ajay Pal Singh, Vice President, Business Development at Beehive, said, “It was our honour and great pleasure to provide MBC with the capacity to generate live 3D election graphics with Wasp’3D. Given that MBC is the biggest public broadcasting station in Mauritius and is watched by the entire island nation, the impact of a 24/7 live coverage with up-to-date 3D graphics was felt on each and every viewer. More so, since this was the first time any channel used real-time 3D graphics and simulations for a live event like the national elections in Mauritius. We are extremely happy to be associated with a project like this that positively affected the whole nation.
