St. Paul, MN Dentist Dr. Hunt Offers Dental Implant Surgery

(PRLEAP.COM) April 3, 2009 – MINNEAPOLIS AND ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA – Dr. Walter L. Hunt now offers surgical placement of immediate load dental implants at his St. Paul dentistry practice.

The immediate load implants allow for Hunt to place the implant and a crown in one appointment that typically lasts no more than an hour, he said. Traditional implants require a healing process of up to six months before a post and crown can be permanently attached.

"Dentists can go out and contact a representative from a dental implant company and spend hour on a quick overview of how to do implant surgery," St. Paul cosmetic dentist Dr. Hunt said, "and you can just start doing them. I chose not to do that."

Instead, Hunt became an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Doing so required him to enroll in a 10-month course at the New York University Dental School. He spent one weekend per month in New York to complete more than 600 hours of study. He completed the training in May 2008 and passed a written exam to become an associate fellow.

"I wanted to make sure I had some credentials and experience before I started doing the dental implant procedure," Hunt said.

The next step for Hunt is to become a fellow of the AAID. He has three years to document cases, submit them for review, go before a board and take an oral exam.

Hunt has performed about 25 immediate load dental implant procedures since he began offering this type of implant at his dental practice this year, he said.

"The patients have been a lot happier because it is a relatively quick process and there really is no discomfort associated with it," Hunt said. "The actual appointment takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete."


Although Hunt has evaluated patients for dental implants and placed crowns on implant for more than 30 years, he sought training on the surgical dental implant procedure for several reasons, he said. He knew it would be more convenient for patients, but it also gives him more control over the final outcome.

There have been times in the past when he referred patients to oral surgeons who didn’t have Hunt’s big picture in mind when they placed a dental implant.
