Welch Completes Fellowship—Becomes Oklahoma’s Only Fellowship Trained ENT Allergist

(Claremore, OK) —- B. Mark Welch, D.O. recently completed his fellowship in Otolaryngic Allergy at St. John’s Oakland Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. In so doing, Dr. Welch became 1 of only 4 Fellowship Trained Ear, Nose, and Throat Allergists in the United States and the first in the state of Oklahoma.

Welch, a physician at the Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy Center of Claremore and Owasso Oklahoma, passed the Otolaryngic (ENT) Allergy Board examination consisting of a written examination and a three-hour oral examination on May 5, 2005.

“The people of Northeast Oklahoma should feel very privileged to have a fellowship trained ENT allergist right in their backyard,” says Michael J. Vlach, Ph.D., a professor at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. “Welch is on the absolute cutting edge of ENT and allergy care. He is a great asset to the people of Claremore, Owasso, Tulsa and all of Oklahoma.”

Welch received notification of passing the Allergy Board exam and received his certification of additional qualification on June 5. He began his Fellowship in November 2002 at St. John’s Oakland Hospital. The Fellowship is either a 1-year continuous or 2-3 year interrupted program. Welch completed the program in two years.

A fellowship in Otolaryngic Allergy is exclusively available to Osteopathic ENT physicians who are board certified in Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat). The fellowship that Welch completed involved presenting and defending over 500 patients and thousands of these patients’ office visits and allergy treatments.

In addition to receiving fellowship training, Welch’s qualifications for quality ENT and Allergy care have been well established. He received the Patrick Murray Award for being the highest scoring osteopathic ENT resident during National ENT in-service exams. Welch also posted the highest score on the AOBOO national board exam for Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery in 2001. His professional memberships include: American Osteopathic Association, AOCOO-HNS, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, and PAN American Allergy.

Welch has established himself as a physician who cares for the whole person.

“However specialized we are I feel it is important to treat the patient as a whole and not just focus on the head and neck,” says Dr. Welch. “My philosophy is to make every attempt to find the root of the problem, to improve my patients overall quality of life, not just treat the symptoms.”

So what is the bottom line impact of Dr. Welch’s credentials?

“Quality allergy care is now available in Claremore and Owasso,” says Welch. “There is no longer a need for patients to drive to Tulsa or other areas for allergy care.”
