Fisher Tomlin see swing back to flowers

Despite an apparent fashion for all things green in 2008 the new trend for 2009 is a definite return to colour and specifically flowers as garden designers chose plants to cheer us up during the economic gloom.

In his annual review of garden design fashions and trends Andrew Fisher Tomlin notes a marked swing towards nostalgia as we fall back in love with musk roses and retro flowers like Dahlias. As he says "we're all looking for some comfort now and if we're staying at home more then we're looking for more colour inspiration. And the natural inspiration for this is to plant more flowers," And its not just flowers that are important again "fragrance in particular is a big must for clients and those calming scents of lavender, Vebena and Viburnum are leading us back to a more relaxed but definitely flowery finish to our planting in 2009."

The future is not all flowers though as Fisher Tomlin notes "Garden designers had got a little bored with all that monochromatic wavy grass and have moved over to a new aesthetic of foliage. But its fashionable foliage with leaves that look just like an Issey Miyake dress or borders that bring to mind the folds in fabric – its foliage as catwalk fashion!" And designers are experimenting with single colours such as black or red in their borders. "We've already seen show gardens based on single colours in 2009, in the UK and overseas, and a major part of those have been foliage. But most of all its colour that is taking fashion by storm."

He also notes that in garden design it's a case of neo-austerity and an emphasis on health and home, that has led to an internalising of our needs as we hit an economic slump, " this means less trophy gardens and a nu austerity where we turn our gardens over to flowers and vegetables" says Fisher Tomlin "indeed many designers are reporting that the most sought after garden feature is now a vegetable or herb garden. In 2009 we're back on track for a flowery finish to the summer season." You can find out more about Fisher Tomlin at http://www.andrewfishertomlin.com
