Nevada Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus today (Aug. 24th) applauded University Chancellor Jim Rogers' statement that education must be a high priority for state government.

An independent study by WestEd recently ranked Nevada's education system as 47th in the nation. Earlier in the week, Senator Titus responded to Chancellor Rogers' call for candidates in next year's gubernatorial race to outline their thoughts on improving our state's commitment to quality education.

"As an educator for decades, it wasn't necessary for me to gather staff and experts to outline my concerns and proposals for raising Nevada's schools to a standard of excellence." said Dina Titus. "I deeply value Jim's passion for education and his presence on the political scene will advance the pressing issues facing parents, teachers, and school administrators today. I know that we must invest more in our schools and teachers and expect excellence in return. We must work harder and smarter, pursuing creative ideas and public/private partnerships. Nevada's kids deserve nothing less."

Jim Rogers, chairman of Sunbelt Communications and Chancellor of the state's university and college system, affirmed his commitment to promoting public policy changes designed to lift Nevada's schools out of present low rankings, promote the potential of the state's universities and colleges, and ensure a vital debate on education this election season. This came in his announcement that the Chancellor will not be a candidate for Governor in 2006.
