Mr. Jeffray D. Gardner, President & CEO, was born in Canada but lived a portion of his life in France and now in the U.S. Following a professional career in ice hockey as an official, Gardner stumbled into the chocolate business quite by accident. In 1995, a friend introduced him to the wonderful world of chocolate and shortly after the two teamed up and a business was born. His desire to taste the fine chocolate he grew up with in France motivated him to open Marsatta only after finding the best recipes for each kind of dark, milk and white chocolate available. He felt the timing was right to enter the US market because of the increasing American appreciation and demand for diversity and quality. “Lets face it, we all grew up with the familiarity of a Hershey or Nestle bar…. they were great but there are all sorts of chocolate out there now, and some awesome ones too!” Gardner said. Marsatta is definitely in the upper echelon of great chocolates.
Gardner never did retire from hockey completely as you can find him on Saturday nights at the LA King’s Training facility (Toyota Sports Center) not only assessing penalties to players but giving out his chocolate as well. It’s one of the few times Gardner says that penalized player’s look forward to a visit in the penalty box.
