Reglan, also known as metoclopramide, is a prescription medication used to treat gastrointestinal disorders (GERD) and nausea in children and adults. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) originally approved Reglan for short-term use only (4-12 weeks), however a number of patients have reported using the drug for longer periods of time.
Recently, the FDA required the manufacturers of Reglan and other metoclopramide-containing drugs to add a "black box warning" to the drugs, which warned of the increased risk of Reglan induced Tardive Dyskinesia.
Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements. Features of the disorder may include grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing of the lips, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the extremities may also occur. Impaired movements of the fingers may also appear.
