Cityscape Solutions Chooses CentOS for Internal Rollout

(PRLEAP.COM) Cityscape Solutions announced today its intention to use CentOS Linux for its internal server and desktop needs. Cityscape Solutions currently uses another distribution for its Linux computing needs.

CentOS Linux, a derivative of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, uses the same publicly available source code as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Proprietary material inside the programs are altered or changed to remove trademark infringement if graphics or logos, or rewritten to be original yet functionally identical if programming language.

“We’ve been looking at Enterprise Level distributions for awhile, now, because of their production-friendly features. Lower update cycles, older and more mature program versions, priority security patches, and enhanced security all play an enterprise Linux distribution,” said Nathan Corbier, Managing Director of Cityscape Solutions, “While Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides everything we need, and it also provides a level of support which we can do internally at a cost savings of thousands of dollars. When you compare TCO of Linux to Windows Server System, you always have the Red Hat Support costs looming over you. With distributions like CentOS, those that can provide the support in-house or through contractors win.”

When asked about how CentOS fits into the Open Source Deployment Plan for his company, Mr. Corbier explained, “This is what Open Source is all about. People say “Free as in Speech, not free as in free beer.” In this case, it is about both. CentOS is community supported, through forums, mailing lists, and their website. It has a wealth of Red Hat Support documents to draw upon, all perfectly free to use under the GNU Public License. Red Hat gives away their operating system, except for proprietary code under another license, but provides fee based commercial support. Red Hat proves that you can make money giving away your source code for others to build on and utilize.”

Cityscape Solutions will deploy CentOS on all servers and desktops which use Linux as the operating system over the coming weeks.
