LateRooms.com can announce that many people planning on a trip to Spain may be heading to the sun-soaked country to relax, unwind and get away from the pressures of everyday life.

As such, donning their running shoes and going for a sprint around the city is unlikely to be high on the list of priorities for those staying in Madrid hotels .

However, if they are staying in the Spanish capital over the new year, then they may want to head out and watch other people doing the hard work and getting some exercise.

On December 31st, hundreds of people grab their trainers and take part in San Silvestre Vallecana – a 10 km run through the Vallecas district.

Whether participants are eager athletes or just out for a gentle jog, the event could suit them down to the ground as competitors are split into two categories depending on their abilities.

Anyone talking part in the run could also use it as an opportunity to take in some of the sights of Madrid, as well as test their stamina, as the route begins on calle Concha Espina near the Bernabeu football stadium, before passing Retiro Park and concluding near metro Portazgo.

The spectacle has been taking place since 1964 and is currently sponsored by Nike's Start2Run campaign.

Last year, the race was won by Tadesse Tola of Ethiopia, while Marta Dominguez triumphed in the women's category.

To make the most of the San Silvestre Vallecana – you should consider booking your hoteles Madrid to avoid disappointment.
