When winter arrives and the air gets a little colder, the Piazza del Plebiscito becomes an open air art gallery showcasing the talent of a different artist every year, What's on When reports.

For 2009/2010, Carsten Nicolai is the creative mind with his work on display and he has built installations relating to the geology of Naples and the surrounding areas.

One of the installations – Pionier I – makes use of a parachute which is powered by a fan and illuminated by strong reflectors so that when darkness arrives, it is highlighted for all to admire.

The second installation – called Pionier II – has hot air balloons floating above Piazza del Plebiscito with an accompanying sound transposition.

It is free for visitors to come and admire the spectacle and it is on show all day.

Over the past few years, some of the other artists to have displayed their work in the square include Jan Fabre, Michaelangelo Pistoletto, Jenny Holzer and Sol Lewitt.
