For those heading to Spain, one place that could capture the attention of those staying in Bilbao hotels is an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum.

From Private to Public – Collections at the Guggenheim, is on until January 10th and emphasises the transition of the gallery from a private to a public institution in 1937.

Since this change took place, the organisation's collection has expanded through a series of major purchases, as well as generous gifts from other people with a passion for art.

According to the institution, this has been brought together "into one comprehensive array of late nineteenth and twentieth-century avant-garde art at the Guggenheim Museum".

Anyone looking to take in some impressive paintings is bound to find something for them at this exhibition and it could be the pefect way to spend an afternoon while taking a break in Bilbao.

Tickets for the exhibition can be purchased at the museum, although visitors are reminded that the office closes half an hour before the venue at 6pm.

As well as Bilbao, there are also Guggenheim museums in New York, Venice, Berlin and Abu Dhabi.
