Franchising or Independent Business Poll

In an informal study conducted by PurchaseFranchise.com, readers were asked about their satisfaction with franchising compared to starting an independent business. Most franchisees polled were highly satisfied with owning a franchise. The poll had 1,690 responses. Seventy percent of franchise owners were satisfied. Franchise owners said that they were overall satisfied with franchising instead of owning their own independent business. An auto repair franchisee said, “I am very happy with the level of support that I have received in the last few months since I opened my business, I’m not sure that if I had started this type of business on my own if I would have gotten this far.”

For the thirty percent that was unsatisfied with their franchisor, many said that they did not get adequate support they wanted in the initial phase, citing that their franchisors were “were unhelpful once they go their franchise fees.” Most admitted that they just simply did not have adequate experience. The highest satisfaction rate among franchisees was in the home construction area. This could partially be due to the fact that many franchisors require previous experience in this area. Construction and home improvement businesses has also experience a strong surge in demand from the rising housing market.

Many franchisees expressed concern that they would like to expand their franchise into multi-units, but did not want to repay the franchise licensing fee when they need little to no support now that they have the experience in the business. The business owners felt they needed the most support in the first few months of opening a franchise, particularly in the first few crucial weeks. Many franchisors have experienced staff on hand during that time.

Overall, most franchisees felt that in this overly competitive global marketplace it is very important to have the brand recognition of a franchise supporting your business.
