AsiaRooms.com can reveal that people using accommodation in Langkawi next month may like to make the trip to the Penang Botanic Gardens in George Town for a special event.

Taking place from March 14th to 21st, the Penang Orchid Festival is a celebration of the famous flower which attracts visitors from all over Malaysia and further afield.

Over 300 orchids of 35 different species will be on display at the gardens, with cultivators from around the country travelling to Penang to showcase their flowers in a spectacular display.

The event is also an opportunity for visitors to take a closer look at orchids and speak with the growers about their production methods.

A number of orchid hybrid species will also be on display at the show, which is open from 10:00 to 19:00 local time each day.

The Penang Botanic Gardens has been described as the "green lung" of the province, which is predominantly metropolitan.

Dating back to 1884, when it was formally established by British botanist Charles Curtis, the site is also known as the Waterfall Gardens, due to a feature of the landscape nearby.

The gardens are situated in a former granite quarry site and feature rare species such as the cannon ball tree and the candle tree.
