AsiaRooms.com reports fans of West Side Story will soon be able to enjoy the classic musical while staying in Kuala Lumpur hotels.

The production is due to visit the Malaysian capital in May as part of its 50th anniversary world tour, making its only south-east Asian stop at the city's Istana Budaya.

First performed on Broadway in 1957, West Side Story has thrilled audiences and sold out theatres around the world with its tragic tale of romance against a backdrop of violent gang rivalry in New York City.

Loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical was composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The film adaptation of West Side Story, released in 1961, won ten Academy Awards.

Famous songs from the production include Tonight, America and Somewhere, which has also been recorded by artists such as Phil Collins, Barbra Streisand and the Pet Shop Boys.

The Istana Budaya, also known as the Palace of Culture, will host West Side Story from May 12th to 24th.

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the Istana Budaya is Malaysia's premier theatre and concert venue.

Tickets for the event are available now and are priced between 190 ringgits (£37) and 590 ringgits.
