AsiaRooms.com divulges people who have booked accommodation in Seminyak during May will be able to join in with one of Bali's annual festivals.

Held in May this year, Galungan lasts for ten days and is typically a time of feasting, dancing and a time to give thanks to all of Bali's deities.

In 2010, the festivities will begin on May 12th, running until May 22nd.

According to local Hindu beliefs, Galungan marks the time when all the gods, including the supreme deity Sanghyang Widi, as well as any deified ancestors return to earth and their former homes.

In order to welcome the returning gods, Balinese people arrange parties, prayers and present a host of offerings to the spirits.

The dates of the festivities are worked out based on the wuku calendar, with Galungan taking place once every 210 days.

Preparations for the ten-day event begin 25 days before it is due to start, which is marked by the Tumpek Uduh ceremonies.

These typically include prayers to the gods to ask for protection for the crops and fruit of the island to ensure that there are enough offerings for Galungan.

One week before Galungan Day, the Balinese people will celebrate Sugian Pengenten, when the focus is on self-control and selflessness.
