AsiaRooms.com highlights May 5th 1950 was a big day in the history of Thailand, as it was on this day that the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej took place, making him the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty.

In each of the 59 years that have followed, people across the country have celebrated this momentous occasion, known as Coronation Day, with commemorative song, dance and various festivals experienced by those staying in hotels in Thailand.

This year will be no exception, with the May 5th dedicated to honouring the day His Majesty took his place on the throne.

Celebrations take place across the country, however, those staying in hotels in Sukhumvit and other parts of Bangkok will see the most extravagant and exciting festivities.

The events actually begin on May 3rd, with the King performing a merit-making ceremony at Amarindra Vinichai Hall to honour the deceased royals who went before him.

On May 4th, Brahmin priests begin the celebrations with a proclamation of the coronation which is followed by an evening of chanting by Buddhist monks.

The following day is Coronation Day and it is marked with a 21-gun salute from the Thai army and navy in addition to the bestowing of decorations on officials and civilians who have done meritorious services to the nation.
