LateRooms.com highlights people who fancy putting their running skills to the test in one of Europe's most picturesque cities may be interested in the forthcoming Volkswagen Prague Marathon.

Taking place on Sunday May 9th, the event brings professional athletes, amateur runners and fundraisers from all over the world to the streets of the Czech capital.

Starting and ending at the famous Old Town Square, the 42.1-kilometre route passes through each historic neighbourhood of Prague and along the banks of the Vltava River.

Athletes planning to take part should book their hotels in Prague and register for the marathon before April 9th, as it costs just €70 (£62) to enter before that date.

Registrations will be accepted until May 4th, although the price will increase to €80 during the last few weeks.

As well as the right to participate, those who register will receive an official race T-shirt, a commemorative medal at the finish, regular refreshments during the event and discounts for selected museums and historical attractions in Prague.

They will also be entitled to a free massage before and after the race, while the Marathon Music Festival will be on hand to keep members of the crowd and participants entertained.

More than 20 live bands and dancers will be performing at the start, along the course and at the finish line to ensure a real party atmosphere when the marathon gets underway.
