AsiaRooms.com highlights anyone who has booked Hong Kong hotels during June should add the date of the city's dragon boat race to their diary.

Every year, crowds will gather along the banks of the Shing Mun River to watch the spectacle unfold.

Traditional narrow boats carved with ornate dragon's heads will battle it out in the race, with each boat holding a crew of between 20 and 22 paddlers.

Held on June 16th this year, it is also known as the Tuen Ng Festival and the event is held to mark the death of a popular Chinese national hero - Qu Yuan - who killed himself in protest at corrupt rulers more than 2,000 years ago.

In addition to the races, there is plenty for anyone staying in Hong Kong to enjoy during the day-long celebration.

Visitors should make sure that they try some of the rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, which are prepared for the festival.

With more than 100 different dragon boat racing teams taking part each year, there will be lots of excitement on the water to keep any travellers entertained.

According to What's On When, each boat also features a drummer who beats out a rhythm to help the paddlers keep their strokes in time and to spur them on to the finishing line.
