LateRooms.com divulges anyone booking accommodation in Auckland in June should ensure that they see at least one performance from the Taonga Whakaari - Maori Playwrights Festival.

This inaugural event has been designed to celebrate Maori culture and will feature a host of shows created by members of the Maori community.

Among the performances scheduled to take part during the week-long event, which will run from June 16th to 23rd, are classic play Purapurawhetu and a new production Raising the Titanics.

Purapurawhetu has won theatrical awards since its debut in 1997 and the current production is directed by Cathy Downes.

It centres around the story of a young weaver whose village community's past, present and future is intricately linked to his own.

Another event that forms part of the theatre festival is the 24-Hour Deadline Theatre Challenge.

This will see five Maori playwrights given 12 hours to write a 15-minute show, with a team of actors and directors then given a further 12 hours to get the play ready for a public performance.

Anyone who wants to see any of the productions that form part of the Taonga Whakaari - Maori Playwrights Festival can buy tickets online or from the venues.

Prices start from NZ$32 for most of the shows, with many of the plays moving on to runs in other theatres in Auckland following the end of the festival.
