June 13, 2010 – Nasty surprises while on holiday are not pleasant yet this new survey has revealed that many holidaymakers suffer from a range of problems including bugs infestations and dirty rooms.

The best hire car price comparison company, Carrentals.co.uk, conducted the survey and they asked 1,500 UK travellers what they had experienced while away and the results were quite shocking. Everything from urine soaked sheets, vomit in beds and condoms under beds have been experienced while half said the general cleanliness of their accommodation was bad.

A massive total of 40% said that surprise costs were another problem and 27% of those blamed their additional outgoings on car hire. Other highly rated problems included paying out for excess baggage and medical treatment while the disappointing state of holiday accommodation standards was reported by 21% who consequently paid out more to change their plans.

Carrentals.co.uk spoke of the survey through their Managing Director, Gareth Robinson: "The information that we gathered from this survey was shocking and we strongly suggest that if you are visiting somewhere for the first time then you conduct some personal research."

Gareth then added: "The problems people suffer with additional costs can be avoided to a point as travel insurance would cover a lot of the medical treatment costs and it is easy to find out how much baggage you are allowed through your airline. Car hire is the same as reading the terms and conditions and checking the car for any previous damage yourself should mean you are void of any additional costs. Also filling up with petrol before returning the car will save you money."

Holiday surprises that rated as the worst were as follows:
- A rat was found sleeping on someone's face while they slept in a Malaysian hotel room
- Bed bugs in one hotel caused a boy's face to swell up to twice its size after he suffered anaphylactic allergic reaction
- One coach driver knocked a cyclist off their bike and then fled the scene leaving bemused tourists to handle the situation
- A holiday advertised for a mere £110 actually cost £3,400
- A hotel room kettle was found to have a dead gecko in it after a couple visiting a Singapore hotel drank funny tasting tea

Along with all the nasty surprises some interesting ones were also highlighted including the fact that Spain is the most sought after destination for Brits with 22% of the votes. The UK gained 15% of the votes to come in second place and staycations were voted the least favourite type of holiday mainly because of the unpredictable weather.

Gareth carried on: "The tough economic climate will apparently not be stopping that many people from holidaying this year as three quarters of those surveyed said they would be taking at least two trips away in 2010."

Internet popularity was also on the increase as a whopping 80% said that they used the internet to book their trip this year followed by 10% using an agent and only 6% doing it over the phone.

Raising the Standard is a great new campaign by Carrentals.co.uk and it is aimed at making the tourism industry a fairer place for those who wish to get what they pay for. In-depth details are available online along with travel advice for anyone booking a holiday.
