AsiaRooms.com - Watch Negara Bull Races in Bali

AsiaRooms.com reports anyone who is keen to witness a sporting spectacle with a difference during their stay in Bali hotels in July should check out the Negara Bull Races.

Taking place every Sunday between the months of July and September, the contests involve chariots being hitched up to the animals before they tear round a track to the cheers of the crowd and the encouragement of their jockeys.

Located in the village of Perancak on the west of the island, the bull races will require a little travelling from Bali hotels in the larger settlements in the east, such as Ubud and Kuta.

Despite this, it should take no more than a couple of hours of travelling before people will be able to settle down and enjoy the action - and the majority of visitors certainly think it is worth the journey.

It is thought that the Negara Bull Races - as with many of Bali's other cultural events - have a link to the seasons, with experts believing they began as a celebration to mark the end of the rice harvesting period.

One of the island's many other festivities, Tumpek Kandang, also involves cattle - the animals are bathed and dressed in human clothes to offer praise to the god Sang Hyang Rare Angon.
